보니엠(Boney M)은 독일 출신의 인기 프로듀서였던 프랭크 패리언(Frank Farian)에 의해 1975년 결성되었다. 보니엠의 탄생은 그들의 독보적인 인기 만큼이나 특별한 것이었다.
1975년 당시 TV 시리즈의 음악을 담당했던 프랭크는 트렌디한 프로듀싱 감각으로 직접 곡을 쓰고 스튜디오 뮤지션들을 동원해 흑인 수사물에서 착안한 보니 엠(Boney M.)이라는 이름으로 그 음악들을 발표했다. 그런데 예상 외로 실험적인 삽입곡 "Baby, Do You Wanna Bump"가 폭발적인 반응과 함께 단 시간에 인기가 치솟았다. 문제는 보니엠이 가상의 밴드인 관계로 대중에게 보여줄 실체가 없었다는 점이다. 프랭크는 신속하게, 그러나 신중하게 오디션을 진행하여 치열한 경쟁을 뚫고 리즈 미첼(Liz Mitchell)을 리드 보컬로 하는 자메이카 출신의 4인조 블랙그룹을 조직하기에 이르렀다.
이들의 음악은 자메이카의 토속 음악인 레게 뮤직을 근간으로 당시 대세였던 디스코 댄스 리듬을 접목시킨 신선한 장르로 유럽과 아시아 전역에 폭발적인 인기를 누렸다. 이들의 데뷔 싱글 "Daddy Cool"에 이어 최근 LG 싸이언 광고 음악으로 쓰인, 우리에게 친숙한 멜로디의 "Sunny"가 빅히트를 기록했고 "Ma Baker"가 뒤이어 영국 챠트 1위를 점령하는 기염을 토하였다. 유라시아 전역은 물론 국내에서 더욱 큰 사랑을 받았던 "Rivers Of Babylon"과 "When A Child Is Born" 등의 발라드 넘버들도 우리들의 70년대의 추억을 장식하고 있는 곡들이다.
보니엠은 70년대에만 전세계 통산 6천 만장이라는 경이적인 앨범 판매를 기록하여 당대 최고의 아티스트들과 어깨를 나란히 했으며 1978년에는 팝 아티스트로는 처음으로 구 소련에서 초청 공연을 가질 만큼 전세계적으로 실로 대단한 인기를 누렸다.

80년대로 들어서면서 "Happy Song"과 "Young Free And Single" 등 히트곡을 내긴 했지만, 멤버교체 등 불안정한 노선을 걸으며 1986년 잠정적으로 활동이 중단되기도 하였다.
그동안 많은 가짜 보니엠들이 나타나 활동하고 있음에도 불구하고, 1990년대부터 리드싱어 리즈 미첼을 중심으로 활동을 재개한, 제작자 프랭크 패리언이 유일하게 인정한 진짜 보니엠은 리즈 미첼이 이끄는 보니엠 하나 뿐이다. 우리가 기억하는 모든 히트곡의 목소리는 그녀의 것이다.
